| Just posing a question to get an idea of where your minds are at.
How much damage is too much or too little in an attack situation? When does is cease being aikido and become aikijutsu?

| | ahhhh... decided to stir the pot a bit afterall eh? From my limited research, it would appear aikijutsu is technique in absence of philosophy. Assuming this definition, Aikido ceases to be a "do" and becomes pure "jutsu" when the practitioner fails to stay their hand when the mind goes forth, or fails to stay their mind when their hand goes forth...

| Too much damage? Any that can have photographic or x-ray evidence. I look on it that I should be able to use a technique against an attacker, whether they be a total stranger or a good friend, and leave them undamaged. The goal is to protect myself and others, amongst those 'others' is my attacker. Any goon can bust heads. A gentleman does not resort to such things unless there is no alternative. I believe as aikidoka, we should have the experience to have other alternatives. |

| | Okay I agree that we should try to inflict the least amount of damage we can. BUT, Aikido is a MARTIAL art still and if someone is truly violently trying to kill and/or maim you I think the dynamic will change. They will end up, in a sense, hurting themselves in the process of trying to hurt you. In a life or death situation I would not hesitate to step it up. But I would do it with love in my heart and try to only use the energy that is given to me. I hope that I can be perceptive enough to never get into a situation where I am forced to "up" my Aikido. I'd rather take the path where I resolve it before it gets there. I know that if some drunken idiot were to throw a punch at me I would not break his arm/wrist or anything like that. Each situation will have a different response depending on the seriousness of the event. Just my two cents. -Faith
