| In the principle of mind-body unification, in the context of extending ki, I have heard and read about having "Soft Eyes." What does this mean? It is baffling to me, I have never heard the term till Johnson Sensei mentioned it a while back and I later on reviewed the principles of Aikido.
I have found the following examples:
Soft eyes are what drive the outside-in dynamic of strategic acumen. If you have soft eyes, you have the ability to be alert for events and trends in the larger business environment and to discriminate between those that are high-impact and those that are not.
When you glare or scowl at something or someone you cut off Ki.
Can anyone give an example in the context of Aikido?
Thanks. |

| Howdy, glad you made it on the boards. A lot of people read them, but only some choose to post.
Soft eyes essentially refers to your focus, literally. When you focus your sight on something, generally it absorbs your attention, if for at least a moment. I think one of O'Sensei's works is, paraphrased, "When you stare intently at your attacker's eyes or weapon, he can steal your spirit." Sounds like something from Art of War, but it is true -- ever been locked up by the way someone stares at you? They've taken your spirit, your center.
An instructor once describe it to me like looking down a tunnel. When you do, you miss seeing things happening around the tunnel, outside of it. Just like real life, when something happens that gets you so pissed off, it's all you can think about. When that happens, your spirit and intentions suffer big-time, you lose the ability to see the little things, and that always ends in tragedy (or illness).
